Eugene Rousseau's eulogy for Tom Liley

It was at the Midwestern Art Camp in Lawrence, Kansas – University of Kansas, that I first met Thomas Liley. That was more than 40 years ago  He was a student at KU, and a valuable assistant to the then director of this renowned camp, Russell Wiley.  I observed that Tom was so careful in his attention to detail, so proactive, that he could have assumed Dr. Wiley’s job! My responsibilities at this camp included presenting a recital and giving lessons to the high school students who were enrolled.  One day, Tom asked if he could have a lesson . . . . and that was the beginning of a long relationship.

We stayed in touch, and several years later I had the opportunity to hear Tom play a recital at a saxophone convention in Missouri.   Not only did he demonstrate his musical ability, but he also conveyed a sense of purpose and a thirst for knowledge. Some months later he enrolled at Indiana University for graduate study.  He was an outstanding student and earned the Doctor of Music degree with distinction.  It was customary for my wife, Norma, to prepare dinner – at least once each year, for my students.  As she became acquainted with each of the members of this talented group. she often remarked that Tom was very bright, but soft-spoken, that he possessed a keen intellectual curiosity, and that he was always unassuming and thoughtful. Through the years Tom became a good friend of ours.

Message from the President - January 2013

It is with great sadness that I report to you the news of Dr. Thomas Liley’s passing this week.  Tom was NASA’s Director of Scholarly Publications for many years, and helped us expand our publications in many new and exciting directions.  Tom was a true scholar and gentleman, who I counted as a friend.  His contributions to NASA and saxophone scholarship in general cannot be overstated, and he will be sorely missed by all of us.

From Tom’s daughter Noel Harmon:

There will be a memorial for my dad from 2-5pm on Sunday, January 27 at The Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home in Naperville, IL.  People should feel free to visit from 2-3pm and a celebration service will begin at 3pm in the East Chapel.

The address is:

44 S. Mill Street

Naperville, IL 60540

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Memorial contributions be made to the Marcel Mule Scholarship Fund at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music

We enthusiastically welcome President-Elect Kenneth Tse, Secretary Robert Young, and Treasurer David Stambler to the executive committee.  We expect the transition to our new officers to be smooth and are excited to begin work on many new ideas and initiatives.  We also have a strong group of NASA members who continue their service to the organization, including our Region Directors who are busy organizing or helping to organize this year’s Conferences.  I offer my heartfelt thanks to all who serve NASA, as our organization continues to grow in many new and exciting ways!

Message from the President - May 2012

Members of the North American Saxophone Alliance:

I hope you enjoyed the recent NASA 2012 Biennial Conference at Arizona State University.  It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends, make new ones, hear some terrific saxophone playing, and to take note of exciting new compositions.   I was impressed with the high level of performance that was presented at this conference.   We are moving the saxophone forward as an effective and vibrant vehicle for expressing musical art.  I want to extend another sincere and heartfelt thank you to Tim McAllister and his saxophone studio at ASU for hosting this event.  I also want to thank the many NASA members involved in presenting this conference for investing their time and energy into its organization.

Message from the President - February 2012

The North American Saxophone Alliance is interested in finding up to two member volunteers that are willing to enter into training with Webmanager Thomas Lowry as NASA Website Content Managers.  The program NASA uses is Drupal V. 6.

Message from the President - November 2011

Members of the North American Saxophone Alliance:

John NicholA sincere thank you to Thomas Lowry, our NASA Webmanager, for doing a considerable amount of work to create and migrate our information to the new and revised website, version 5. The site now includes a Saxophone Repertoire Entry, Saxophone History Timeline, Upcoming Professional Member Performance Listing, and the ability to upload images.  It is now easier to navigate and find information.  Additionally, members will have the chance to create content on the website by using these new features.

I find the Saxophone Repertoire Entry database to be especially attractive.  NASA members will be able to create a saxophone repertoire list by entering information on pieces that they have performed or recommend.   Besides listing pertinent information (title, composer, publisher), there will be an area for a short abstract that describes each composition and lists its instrumentation. The Saxophone Repertoire Entry database provides the ability to search saxophone literature by title, composer, instrumentation, and a variety of other fields.   This will become a living document, capable of expanding and staying current with our art.  Take a minute out of your day to explore this latest feature, and add new literature to the Saxophone Repertoire Entry database!

Message from the President - April 2011

Members of the North American Saxophone Alliance:

The NASA Executive Committee was quite busy in late February and March with discussion concerning our performance competitions, the mechanics of the competitions, prize amounts, application fees, and adjudicator compensation. In addition to the three existing competitions (jazz, classical, and quartet), we created three new competitions that will be held at our next Biennial Conference at Arizona State University in March of 2012.
