From the NASA Officers - Director of Scholarly Publications
[G2:1966 class=g2image_float_left]Undoubtedly, the most important event last year in the Office of Scholarly Publications was the publication in July of Larry Teal: There Will Never Be Another You. I had the great pleasure to work with the author, Dr. Mary Durden Teal, although the project took much longer than either of us had anticipated. The biography is a major addition to the literature related to the saxophone and belongs in the libraries of every college and university with a music program.
The NASA Store contains several other items that sold well this past year, especially the Sonata by David Maslanka and our compact disc The Saxophone Craze. Back issues of the annual Saxophone Symposium also had many buyers, and we hope to better promote the older and historically interesting quarterly issues. Many of our customers reside overseas, and we have recently linked ourselves to the saxophone associations in Australia and Great Britain to expand that market. The establishment of accounts with PayPal and the United States Postal Service has enabled NASA to better respond to customers.
If I learned anything during the preparation of the Teal biography, it is that it is impossible to accurately predict when new items will become available. Nonetheless, I still hope that the second volume in our Biographical Series will be published by the end of the year. Eugene Rousseau: With Casual Brilliance promises to be an interesting and informative biography of one of our instrument’s most important performers and teachers.
Other projects have been proposed and will be announced as they also reach fruition. It’s a privilege for me to be a part of these events, and I look forward to still more exciting developments.
